The deprived backstreets of East London led Liam O'Keefe to crime and a blinkered obsession to make money any way he could.

By 1974, when he was twenty-six, Liam had become wealthy, but when forced to run from London's gritty 1970s underworld, he found himself in North Devon.

With a new identity, he relaxed in the laid-back atmosphere of this remote part of Devon. He became so enchanted by the picturesque surroundings and the indigenous, quirky characters he met, particularly one bubbly waitress, that he began to re-evaluate his life.

Until his new friends asked for his help, to help would mean his returning to London and facing those he ran from.

Barry S Dowding

Those who know North Devon well will know that a Grockle is a slightly derogatory Devonian name for a visitor, a name that could not be used to describe Barry who has lived in North Devon for so long  he can only be described as a local.

Barry has written many short stories but Grockle is his first published novel.
